woman eating fruitFruit and weight gain … yup – they can be connected.

All natural, sweet and refreshing fruit is a delicious part if a healthy diet. But because it raises your insulin level, eating too much fruit can cause weight gain. On the flip side, if you cut it out completely, you’ll be missing out on the amazing health benefits fruit provides. Fruit packs a ton of fiber, vitamins, minerals, natural enzymes and antioxidants! To keep your weight stable you must eat fruit with specific guidelines so you can avoid triggering an insulin spike, which may cause the rest of your meal to be stored as fat. Ewe…no,no,no!

Here are my totally AWESOME suggestions on how to eat fruit and avoid weight gain:

  1. Eat fruit on an empty stomach – Make sure you eat it at least two hours after your last meal or first thing in the morning. In addition, wait about an hour after eating fruit before you eat anything else. This makes fruit a great mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack — just when your energy starts to wane. The best low glycemic choices for fruit are melons, small apples and berries.
  2. Eat fruit alone – Fruit contains natural sugar, which will cause your body to release the fat-storing hormone insulin. Eat fruit by itself to make sure it‘s burned as fuel for your sacred vessel rather than stored as fat and to avoid any additional calories from being converted to fat. Look for sneaky ways fruit could be added to your meals; chopped apples or orange sections in salads, drinking smoothies while eating food, etc…
  3. Eat fruit whole – Whole fresh fruit contains more fiber, which helps to slow the absorption of sugar into your body. Banish fruit juices and dried fruit from your diet, as they have more condensed sugar and fewer nutritional benefits.
  4. Surprise!!! – One exception to the eat-fruit-alone and only on an empty-stomach rule are berries. Berries are high-fiber, high-antioxidant beautiful little nuggets of deliciousness and can occasionally be served as a dessert after a full meal — especially if it keeps you from indulging in a more dangerous sugar loaded dessert instead.

Fruit and weight gain are definitely connected. Goddess, sugar is sugar…even if it’s natural sugar!
